Welcome to Hostelling International - South Algonquin Backpackers, an established hostel run by travellers, for travellers. Relax and enjoy your stay in the comfort of our unique century-old frontier hotel. Surrounded by lakes, forest and unspoiled scenery on the edge of Algonquin Park, logging and hunting remain the backbone of the local economy with tourism on the rise. But don't expect to see hordes of camera-toting sightseers or lines of buses and campervans. Our tiny village of Maynooth (population 200) is still very much 'off the beaten path'!

Let us outfit you and get you started on your overnight trip in Algonquin, or take advantage of our convenient daily park shuttle with options to hike, bike, horseback ride, canoe or kayak.

In the evening unwind and mingle over some food or drinks in our licensed pub or dining room, or make use of our guest kitchen, pool table, satellite TV, VCR, laundry, internet or large book exchange.

    We are located on Hwy #3 on the west outskirts of Port Colborne, about 1 mile west from Lock #8 of the Welland Canal - St Lawrence Seaway system.

    From Buffalo NY cross the US-Canada border at the Peace bridge and take the first exit after the immigration control. Follow the signs to Hwy #3 and drive west about 30km until crossing the Welland Canal and passing the intersection with Hwy # 58. Seaway Motel is on the south portion of Hwy 3.

    Property Description
    We are a truly funky 15 room motel and restaurant, located near Algonquin Park. There is lots of wilderness activities in the area including canoeing, camping, biking, hiking, dog sledding and playing! We even have painted bicycles on the roof! Ask about our canoeing in THE PARK (Algonquin) trips!

    Our rooms are all equipped with two double beds, 60 channel colour TV, refrigerators, telephones, high speed internet, four piece bath, funky murals, cosy flannel bedspreads, heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer!

    Our restaurant is really wild!! Our food is excellent and the decor and music are 'one-of-a-kind'.

    We are located on Highway 11, halfway between Huntsville and North Bay. 3 hours drive north of Toronto. The train stops in South River, and we are happy to pick you up. The bus stops in South River as well, and we can go and get you there as well!

    If you are flying past South River, jump! We'll pick you up where you land.

    Property Description
    Located on a sandy layer of ancient Lake Superior beach-soil, the hostel is surrounded by huge white and red pine, black and white spruce and jack pine. The hostel is only 1km from the fabled majestic Mackenzie River and the lake itself and is convenient to the many trails that exist. It is also just 1km from two conservation parks. Wild animals inhabit the area such as bear, lynx, porcupines, moose, beaver, skunk and deer.

    Thunder Bay International Hostel is on approximately 8 acres of wooded property faciling Lakeshore Drive. Besides an area for tenting and campfires there is a main building which has rooms and a kitchen. An adjacent building contains internet, long distance telephones, common room and three bedrooms.

    The hostel area includes outcrops of pre-Cambrian rock, various lichens, ferns and mosses - altogether a biological grab bag of northern Ontario flora and fauna. Amethyst and agate are also found in the area. 11km east of us is the road heading to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park.

    The hostel has:

    - A grocery and laundrette nearby

    The hostel is a member of Backpackers Hostels Canada. Greyhound buses stop at or near the hostel from both directions. Just ask the driver to let you off. Camping is also available. We also have a hostel on 139 Machar Ave, Thunder Bay.

    We do not accept any credit cards.

    PLEASE NOTE: Taxes of 15% are added on to the amount due on arrival.

    We are at Mackenzie Station Road and Lakeshore Drive, 18km east of Thunder Bay and 1km south of the Trans-Canada highway 11-17.

    City to city Greyhound Bus: Ask the driver to drop you off!

    There are no passenger trains to and from Thunder Bay, sorry.

    The airport is the far end of town about a 25 minute drive right to the hostel. We suggest taking a taxi or city bus to the Greyhound Station and then using the Greyhound to come to the hostel.

    Property Description
    We are located on the north side of downtown Thunder Bay, and are easily accessible from the bus station and airport. The hostel is also just a five minute walk from the waterfront.

    Our house has 6 rooms upstairs with shared bathrooms and a sauna and shower room. We also offer free linen, coffee and tea. There is a friendly atmosphere here.

    A large kitchen is available for your use with a stove, 2 fridges, microwave, pots and dishes. Free internet access is only a 10 minute walk away at the public library. Two laundrettes are located one street over. Food stores and delis are handy to the hostel area, as are several bars. We also have a hostel on 1594 Lakeshore Drive, Thunder Bay.

    No smoking or drinking on site.

    The hostel is located on Machar and John Str. The bus station only 20 min walk or take local bus (Main Line) East.

    Airport bus stops on Algomas Street. Walk down Cornwall turn right on to Machar Ave. If driving from west or east when on Hwy 11-17 turn down Oliver Rd and drive towards Lake Superior. Pass Algoma Str and turn rt on Machar Ave.

    Property Description
    Rustic, yet clean, comfortable and friendly, the Wolf Den is a perfectly situated year round base for exploring Canadian wilderness in beautiful Algonquin Provincial Park. Share stories of your Algonquin canoeing, hiking, biking or Nordic ski adventures around the campfire. Then relax in our classic log cabins, timber frame lodge or warm up in our cedar log sauna.

    The main lodge with its unique combination of log and timberframe construction contains a large fully equipped communal kitchen, a cozy lounge area with a fireplace, dining areas and seven private rooms for 1, 2 or 3 people each.

    Our two bunkhouses are beautiful log cabins that can accommodate groups, families as well as the solo traveler. There are four private rooms that can accommodate 4 people in each. They are perfect for couples, small groups, and families looking for a truly Canadian experience. The upstairs dorms can sleep 8 people and can be booked for larger groups or by the individual backpacker looking for quality accommodation at a reasonable price. Book a whole bunkie for 16 people and receive a reduced rate.

    We also have private traditional cabins which sleep 4, 6 or 7 people. Each cabin has table and chairs, sitting areas and a coffee maker/kettle inside. They also have BBQs and an outdoor seating area, (the cabin for 4 has a screen in porch).

    A 15 minute walk away will bring you to the top of Ragged Falls, one of Ontario’s most beautiful waterfalls. Right across the road is the start of the Beetle Lake hiking trail, a moderate hike through a variety of forest types and a breathtaking scenic lookout. Wildlife and environmental programs are available for small and large groups upon request.

    The Wolf Den is situated on 4 acres of bush surrounded by 40 acres of crown land to hike or bike. We have a volleyball/badminton court, central cooking and dining area outside, and a gazebo for those rainy nights. Across the road are the Paddle Inn Restaurant (licensed), and the Timber Trail Trading Post. Full outfitting is available at Algonquin Outfitters which is five minutes down the road.
