Very nice place. Didn't seem as fun as some of the others, but definitely very safe and clean. The mattresses are made out of some sort of hard foam, which kind of sucks, but its still a very nice facility. They enforce quiet time after 10 PM so if you're a light sleeper looking for a tame, neat hostel, this is nice.

janamills934 from England stayed here on 30th July 2007
Really nice hostel, good staff very friendly though a little disorganized at times! nice place, clean and all new, some might think the area is a little sketchy but its fine really. more importantly its a bit too far uptown if your here for a downtown new york trip.

Stayed there for one night before we could get to our prefered hostel and it was a plesant stay. Location is ok, but in NY as long as your within 2 mins of a subway stop you can get anywhere quickly and cheaply. We much prefered this hotel to the private room we had at the swiss 1291 hostel, kinda wish we'd booked this one for 8 days instead of the swiss one!

Radha from Canada stayed here on 24th June 2007
The bathroom is shared, but there is a wash basin in the room, which is awesome. I was only there for a day, so I didn't need the shower, but was very glad to have fresh soap and clean towels at the basin in my room.

Our second stay. An excellent hotel overall, clean, with helpful staff and a great location.

Jennifer from USA stayed here on 20th May 2007
Clean, but VERY hard beds and pillows though. Made it very difficult to sleep.

julieloiret3156 from France stayed here on 11th May 2007

adeleclint6496 from England stayed here on 27th April 2007
We found the location perfect. 5 mins from the Empire State building, 15 mins to Times Square. Great Korean and Chinese food near by. The staff were really friendly and the hotel had such character. We would stay there again and recommend it to anyone.

Andrew from New Zealand stayed here on 16th April 2007
We stayed in Hotel 31 and had a great time. It is well located to most of the sights/shopping you will see and do. You dont need to The rooms size is fine. You don't need much when all you have to do is sleep and store your suit case. We didn't have a private bathroom. (We preferred to spend the money enjoying Manhatton). A shared bathroom wasn't a problem as there are two bathrooms on each floor and we didn't have to wait at all. Sinks in the rooms helped to minimise waiting times. The shared bathrooms are clean. No safe in the room but we didn't have any problems with security. Overall this is a well located and clean hotel that serves the purpose at a good rate. You can get better but triple (and more) the price. We would stay there again for sure and would recommend it to others.

room got up graded so we had our own bathroom woo hoo! walls were very thin so could hear when people came in late at night, but apart from that pretty good place to stay, clean had a tv large room ideal for budget travellers

maryelinnell4293 from USA stayed here on 05th August 2007
Even though this rating seems poor, the Sun Bright Hotel is exactly what you pay for. It's one of the cheapest places you'll find in the city, and if you just want a bed for the night, it's perfect. Yes, the walls are thin, but its not unbearable since you get a private room and aren't listening to the conversations of others in a hostel dorm room. the bathrooms are clean enough and the sheets are clean enough. nothing special, but not bad. you even get a TV in your room which has all movie channels basically. Overall, i'd suggest staying here if you want a location right next to Little Italy and the subway and something that's cheap. it's nothing special, but it suited our needs and we felt pretty safe as two girls traveling alone.

tjfranks1702 from England stayed here on 03rd August 2007
Generally clean, but need to remove the hair from pughole and dust from extractor fans. Thanks

jannesuominen4229 from Finland stayed here on 29th July 2007
This hostel looked nice on the web, but the reality was something else. First they had arranged our room to a different location, on the next block. Well this wasn't that bad, but the hostel wasn't really that nice. We had double private room, and the size of the room was just bigger than the bed in it. Room was quite dirty, it clearly wasn't cleaned for a while, under the bed was horrible. Apart from the cleanliness this hostel was ok. Well, I wasn't completely satisfied for the price-quality relation. Location is good, in the heart of chinatown. I won't go here again for these rates.

sufil from Poland stayed here on 23rd July 2007
never, never don't go on the second or third floor :/

niranjan1275051 from India stayed here on 02nd July 2007
The hotel was well maintained and the staff was friendly. However, we faced problems with the internet connection. We thought there was free wifi, but they charge $6/hr. Also the television showed just 3 channels with poor connectivity. Drinking water was not available freely we had to buy a .5l bottle for 1 dollar every time. Overall, it is a good place for students and those on budget to stay and in a very good location.

ronjulia3879 from New Zealand stayed here on 15th June 2007
Paper thin walls meant we audibly witnessed a couple involved in a threesome with a transvestite, and the marital fallout that resulted. The whole episode lasted from 11pm until about 4am ,so not lot of sleep for us. A rather obscure notice in the reception area said that minimum time charged would be 3hours.We only noticed that as we checked out!

gradischnig552 from USA stayed here on 13th June 2007
There was not record of my reservation until my third day there. I was charged for a double because Hostelworld\'s system said they only had a double available eventhough when I arrived there was no reservation on record and I said I wanted to register as a single in a single room. The site said a single room had a double bed, but when I went to pay, the clerk and manager said that single rooms have a single bed and are smaller. They also said they had to charge for what was listed on the Hostelworld reservation, eventhough that reservation did not come through until the day I was leaving, a Thursday after checking in on Sunday evening and being told that Sunday morning by phone that they did have a reservation. I don\'t think they even looked. But I was glad to have a room in spite of the missing reservation and they did give me one night free because of the mixup. But it was still more out of pocket than I had expected. I will say all of this controversy was conducted in a congenial manner and the staff was very helpful otherwise. You do have to wait sometimes for the bathroom. And the floor of the bathroom was sometimes a little muddy because of splashed water and dirty shoes. But it was clean otherwise.

rob_nzoz3905 from Australia stayed here on 15th June 2007
Although listed on Hostelworld, this place is not a hostel. It is a really dodgy hotel that actually has prices for part day stays. It's true, the walls are super thin and it's very noisy at all hours of the night. During my stay a couple next to me had a huge argument and it culminated in her storming out, and him hosting a hooker later in the evening, then her coming back and the argument continuing! Don't stay here!

breerobinson4733 from Australia stayed here on 07th June 2007
Very noisy, I booked a room with 3 beds only to get a room with a double and a single, luckily they had another room so we got an extra single. Walls are really thin, aircon is noisy and there was a lot of yelling going on in reception in the middle of one night........not sure that I would return. If it wasnt for sleeping pills I probably wouldnt have slept!!

We stayed in a double room with shared bathroom. Both very very clean and more than decent size for the price you pay. We got a room on the back of the buiding and the night hours were incredibly quite...we've never thought that so quite places existed in NY. We definetely suggest this place!

I had a lovely time at the Chelsea Inn. Friendly staff, clean rooms. Top it off with the central location and you can not wish for anything more...Oh, the 'take-away-breakfast' from Nana's is both smart and delicious!

Mark from Australia stayed here on 17th April 2007
Great location, staff were friendly. It was right near one of the best gay night clubs, loads of fun, but very noisy on those nights you needed to stay in. Breakfast down stairs was simple, but delicious. Bathroom clean and the room was cleaned and tidied everyday. Stayed a week and it proved a great base to shop, party and see the sights. Would go back if on a budget again.

eliane from Switzerland stayed here on 13th April 2007
We stayed 10 days in this hotel and it was really okay. They cleaned every day, so it was pretty clean and the bath towels has been changed every day too. We had a twin bed room and shared the bath room with the room next door. The room is tiny but absolutly okay and the bath sharing was fine too. Breakfast was included and we enjoyed it every morning! :-) (a fresh pastry, coffee and a fruit or a fruit juice) I can really recommend this hotel, the relation of price and service was fine. Next time I am in NYC I am going to stay there again.

Veronika from Czech Republic stayed here on 18th March 2007
The location is brilliant and the character of the old building is very New York. So we cannot speak highly enough of th Chelsea Inn in that respect. We also found the place to be spotless. However I personally do have one major gripe, and woudl warn you to make sure you really will get teh accommodation you have booked: I made teh online booking at elast a month aehad of our arrival. I chose the Chealsea Inn becuase of previous reccomendations and because of the price - I am not rich and price was a big concern. We were promised a double bed and a shared bathromm, however when I emailed one night before our arrival to confirm our booking, I was told that fro watever reason (none given) our room was not available and we woudl have to settle for signle beds and a shared bathroom. A double bed had been what I was after, and I had chosen a room with a shared bathroom as a preference over single beds. I was unhappy that I had not been advised of this change ahead of time, as I would have then booked somewhere else. So I emailed the Inn to see what else, if anything, they could offer. I received an email in reply to say that a studio, with its own bathroom, was avalable. I emailed about the price and then emailed again to confirm the price. In my email I stated that I wanted to know the total in comparison to teh total we were to be paying for the room we had already booked. The reply I received was £179 in total. With this we arrived at teh Chealse Inn, settled down only to be told that the "total" had been the total for the night, and not THE total. Due to it being St Patrick's weekend and us arriving so alte and having not been to New York I decided that tehre was no point arguing. But at the cost of having to pay THREE TIMES the amount I had been expecting. Needless to say, this came as a huge shock. My boyfriend insisted it had been a misunderstanding but I am convinced it was not and I felt really cheated. Our "studio" was nothign more than a big room with a double bed and shower/toilet. Very clean and warm, but nothing spectacular. We were still out facing the street adn right next door to a gay night club that pumped music all night long and we still had to listen to the pipeworks throughout the night. So while I would recommend this place, especially if you like to get a taste of New York and you have lots of spare cash, I think that if you are as naive as me then do make sure you email ahead to confirm the booking and do make sure if there is a change in anythign you have a total cost breakdown before you arrive. If you cannot afford to spend too much you may find yourself on the top floor somewhere, with many steps to climb - there are no elevators.

It would be a good idea to spray the hostel or something. There were tons of cockroaches all around the room.. climbing our luggage, the walls, etc.. it was not comfortable to try to kill them everyday. Everything else was pretty good! Congratulations to the breakfast!

Nivethika from Australia stayed here on 26th July 2007
the staff were unavailable most of the time, some didnt even speak english which is inappropriate when running a hostel. it is completely overpriced for the lack of facilities it offers. the only good thing about this hostel was the breakfast. thoroughly disappointed. cockroaches everywhere.

vegas4112 from Sweden stayed here on 08th July 2007
It was nice, though the triple beds had a very bad mattress below, but we got some sleep finally. I wouldnt recommend this if you're allerigc cause there seemed to be some mold in the roof of our room. Otherwise it was nice, the cockroaches was friendly.. no really there was none, just a small bug in the room.. :)   Read Owner Comments

Great location, friendly personnel. Slightly flaken off, mold in bathroom, but very clean otherwise.

Monique from Belgium stayed here on 24th June 2007
I missed the contact with other people and the reason is that there is no place where you can meet the others. In the evening when you come home you are oblied to stay in your room.

ren_2001 from England stayed here on 15th June 2007
This is a lovely hostel, however for those travelling on their own and wanting to meet fellow travellers to go out with and party in NYC, then this isn't the place to come. The common area (i.e. kitchen) is small, and a number of the rooms are occupied by families and long term residents, so the traveller atmosphere is lost.

At first I thought the room was really small. And it was, but I got used to it. No alarm clock so I used my cell phone. Room was clean but shared bathroom wasn't too clean, I don't think the shower was cleaned while I was there. I was there for 2 nights, 3 days :S

For a single traveller (shared bath 149.00usd) to NYC there are much better (cheaper) options...YMCA WestSide. Wireless internet only works in the lobby (not in rm. 707) The room is the size of a large walk-in closet...but I didn't complain since I was only there two nights but I don't recommend and I wouldn't stay here again. But location is only 1/2 block from Time Sq. area and 1/2 blk to two different subway stations. So you step out the door and you are in the middle of things which is good. Clean but very threadbare with poor renovation for the cheaper rooms...Mostly quiet.

Cynthia from USA stayed here on 01st May 2007
I stayed for 2 night there...gotta say... I guess that for that price in NY ..it's ok but still don't expect much as the single room I stayed in was really small, ugly and the TV didn't work. Anyways, I didn 't have time to complain or think about it as location was great and I only used it to sleep a few hours.

singostarr3882 from Ireland stayed here on 01st May 2007
The room was tiny, but that seems to be the style in New York.. It was clean, location was magic & the staff were friendly..

jeremy_hhh from Singapore stayed here on 10th March 2007
the room was really really tiny for the price, but i guess being on the theater district location makes up for it

    Property Description

The Newly Renovated Hotel 17 is a chic budget hotel conveniently located in Downtown New York near the East Village, Gramercy Park, Greenwich Village, and Washington Square Park.

A few years ago Woody Allen filmed his movie Manhattan Murder Mystery at Hotel 17. Madonna has stayed here, as well as many other celebrity artists, models, and actresses.

Accommodations in our safe and friendly hotel are perfect for tourists, students, and international travelers on a budget.

East Village:The East Village is perhaps the 'Social Mecca' of New York City. Much different than Greenwich Village, the East Village offers a more grungy, rock and roll type atmosphere.

The East Village is home to many major acts of the past such as The Ramones, Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground, as well as many punk bands that still continue to play on. The Fillmore may not be alive anymore, but there are a lot of great clubs such as Coney Island High, CBGB'S, and Irving Plaza. (which is only 3 blocks from Hotel 17)

We knew we'd be arriving late at night, so we e-mailed in advance to make sure someone would be there to check us in when we arrived. They assured us they would, but when we arrived nobody was there. If it wasn't for another guest being awake and in the lobby at the time, we wouldn't have been able to get in. We then had to find our room number on the list of check-ins for the day, and then find our key and show ourselves up to our room (after leaving a note for the absent staff telling them we'd pay in the morning). Then we got woken up an hour later by the staff, just to be told that it was fine for us to pay the next morning. Then nobody was there there next morning either, so we eventually only paid the following evening. Other than that, it was quite a pleasant stay, although the place is so close to the subway that you can hear the trains going by all night.

arunze3065 from Germany stayed here on 29th July 2007
the bedrooms very clean and great. the bathrooms were just DISGUSTING!! clean them more often!! the neighborhood was awful esp. at night!! It was very dangerous to walk around in east harlem and even a guy followed us to the hostel!!! the next day we took a cab!!! but the staff was definitely the friendliest I've ever met!! :)

alexabate2628 from England stayed here on 01st August 2007
Overall it's fine but if you're a female alone either except getting taxis back at night or stay somewhere else. (Cost of taxi back may equal cost of staying somewhere Downtown)

Jiri from Czech Republic stayed here on 13th July 2007
Spent 7 nights. If you want to use the accomodation for overnight only and spend the days in the city it is the perfect place on Manhattan. Breakfast usually bread, butter, marmelade, juice, coffee, tea, toastmaker - all on serve yourself basis - good way to start the day. The neighborhood seemed safe, short walk from subway to guest house. Stayed there in 2 bed room with TV and airconditioning, simply equipped, good enough for our needs. Showers / bathrooms in the hall separate for male/female. Would come here again. The price for private room for 2 is unbeatable. Free internet.

Martina from Austria stayed here on 07th July 2007
we didn't expect more or less. unfortunaltey it is impossible to get into contact with the front desk over the phone or e-mail. they simply do not write back and tell you a wrong phone number. altogether our stay was pretty well

rebeccajanestancliffe8789 from England stayed here on 11th July 2007
this was a fantastic welcoming place to stay...there is really no communal space to hang out in in the evenings if you're up for a quiet night, or none that is pleasant to chill out'...the breakfast is a little uninspiring, but i would most certainly stay here again, the staff are really wonderful...

Jan from Germany stayed here on 29th June 2007
Let me give you a breathless rundown of the facts: the air-conditioning did a fine job, the bed (matress) was good (not too hard nor soft), cleanliness (incl. toilets and showers) OK, breakfast also OK, and sometimes there were freshly made pancakes , which elevated this experience. The staff is friendly, and you are only two blocks away from the subway, and even when we came back at 12 in the night we didn't feel frightened by the surroundings (but things might look differently if you are female and on your own, but it's not necessarily dangerous). To sum it up: you won't get the same amount of bang for your buck anywhere else on Manhattan!

lewispreece4710 from Wales stayed here on 09th July 2007
We've been travelling around the U.S for the last 2months and this has been the best hostel we have stayed in, including some of the motels and hotels. We would rocomend this to others as is is really good value for money, very clean, the staff are really nice. The sub way is just around the corner and it takes about 5-10minsmax to get to times square which is really good.

Paolo from Italy stayed here on 22nd June 2007
Hi, this hostel is ok, safe and really cheap, just 60 $ a day for a double-room including breakfast, tv & conditioning air in the room. The location is not so central but u are so near the underground (maybe a little too much 'coz u can sometime hear it) and just at 20 mins from the center by underground. I spent a good time there. See u everybody!!

gwen_blabla4569 from France stayed here on 24th June 2007

We really couldn't fault The Wolcott. A truly perfect position to be, right in the middle of whichever part of Manhatten we wanted to access. It's no frills, but everything you might need. We found it very comfortable. The price is very good. Staff were helpful, coffee/tea and muffin for breakfast........ everything we wanted for a very pleasant few days away.

I will NEVER book through Hostelworld again, as u r the only page that charges 10% deposit and mislead customers that this is deposit for the accomodation instead as money paid directly to u. And believe me that i will tell it to everyone i know. Vesna

First I will like to comment here our experience with Hostelworld, as this is the first opportunity to write to "somebody". When we wanted to recornfirm our hotel reservations, done a month before, the day before of our arrival, the answer from the hotel was they have not received them and they were sold out for the next day, so we should contact Hostelworld in order to receive a solution. The res.nbr. corresponds to Hostelworld and not Wolcott Hotel. We could not find any number or customer service in the web page that we can ask, so we call again the hotel and finally they made us a new reservation. Upon our arrival they say that the reservation request arrived that morning, VERY STRESSFUL. The hotel was OK according with our expectations. Our only comment can be we had a noisy first night, with door slams, loud voices, etc. But after we change room and floor, everyting was OK. The hallway of the 8th floor had a very bad smell, seems like somebody cooks in one of the rooms.

I wish you cleaned the room everyday instead of waiting till the last day. Also, some desk and chairs would be nice. Our room was smelly too. Otherwise, everything was ok.

It was the worst experience I have ever had!!! The linens and the pillow cases were so dirty. There were roaches in the room, and the staff were so rude. Basically everything was horrible. Even if you have to stay there check the room before you make the payment. M-

i just can give a warning to evereybody, who wants to go to this hostel. It is not clean, there is no aircondition in every room, and if there are problems, you can not even get the manager, he is always "out"..., this hostal is not worth the money you pay, and if you want to leave earlier, you don`t even get your money back!

The exterior of the building looks great. the inside is so-so. its really close to the north end of central park in a good neighbourhood. having a fridge in the room was a major plus

They had no change?! my total was $75, i had 4 $20 bills, he could barely mae change, in fact he said he couldnt... until i did not let them get away with that... the room was tinyy, which is ok, but the tv barely worked. they need to be a bit more clear on the conditions.

doors won't shut, you have to lock them at all times; only one key for a 4-bed room; bunkbeds are not safe at all and very noisy

The place is serviceable, but the website is misleading. Probably slightly overpriced for what you get.

no airconditioning in the rooms broken locks window not lockable wholes in the wall dirty floor the most horrible room i´ve ever seen too expensive for that kind of staff only payment per cash - no creditcard cash-maschine in hostel give only 100 dollar per time and charged 4 dollar. for 300 dollar we have to pay 12 dollar plus creditcard charges.
