Property DescriptionLocated on a sandy layer of ancient Lake Superior beach-soil, the hostel is surrounded by huge white and red pine, black and white spruce and jack pine. The hostel is only 1km from the fabled majestic Mackenzie River and the lake itself and is convenient to the many trails that exist. It is also just 1km from two conservation parks. Wild animals inhabit the area such as bear, lynx, porcupines, moose, beaver, skunk and deer. Thunder Bay International Hostel is on approximately 8 acres of wooded property faciling Lakeshore Drive. Besides an area for tenting and campfires there is a main building which has rooms and a kitchen. An adjacent building contains internet, long distance telephones, common room and three bedrooms. The hostel area includes outcrops of pre-Cambrian rock, various lichens, ferns and mosses - altogether a biological grab bag of northern Ontario flora and fauna. Amethyst and agate are also found in the area. 11km east of us is the road heading to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. The hostel has: - Private and family rooms available - Camping - Free use of bicycles - Internet access - A grocery and laundrette nearby The hostel is a member of Backpackers Hostels Canada. Greyhound buses stop at or near the hostel from both directions. Just ask the driver to let you off. Camping is also available. We also have a hostel on 139 Machar Ave, Thunder Bay. City to city Greyhound Bus: Ask the driver to drop you off! There are no passenger trains to and from Thunder Bay, sorry. The airport is the far end of town about a 25 minute drive right to the hostel. We suggest taking a taxi or city bus to the Greyhound Station and then using the Greyhound to come to the hostel.
