Bonanza Bus Lines services Newport. Convenient bus service is available from Boston, Cape Cod, or New York City. Inexpensive local bus is available to and from Providence, Rhode Island. Approximate travel time between Newport and New York City is 3 hours; Newport and Boston is 1½ hours; Newport and Cape Cod is 2½ hours.

Walking directions to 16 Howard Street from Newport Transportation & Visitor Information Center:
The Transportation & Visitor Information Center where you will arrive if coming by bus is on America's Cup Avenue. Keeping the water on your right walk about 1/8 mile to where America's Cup feeds into Memorial Drive. Thames St. will be on the right. Take a right on Thames St. Continue straight for about 8 blocks. When you see a sign on a brick wall on your right that says "Vincent's On the Pier" you have reached Howard St. Take a left. (Howard St. is a one way street going towards the waterfront. If driving you will need to take the next left on Pope St., then left on Spring St., then a left on Howard) 16 Howard St. is the large white house with black shutters - third house on the left.

By Bus to Newport: Bonanza Bus lines services Newport. From Boston take a bus from Bonanza Bus Lines (Peter Pan or Bonanza) from South Station to either Providence or Newport. If to Providence, then change to a Rhode Island Transit Authority (RIPTA) bus (this is the cheapest way to travel on public transportaton between Newport and Boston). From any other location take a bus to Providence then take a Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority (RIPTA) bus to Newport. Follow walking directions above.

By car to Newport: From points north - 95S, exit 4S (south of Providence), to 138E to Newport. From Cape cod - 6W to 195W, to 24S, to 138E to Newport. From points west - 95N to 4S (just before Providence), to 138E to Newport.

By Train, then bus to Newport: Take AMTRAK train to Providence. Change to Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority (RIPTA) bus for Newport.

By air to Providence: The T.F. Green airport outside of Providence, RI, is the closest airport to Newport. The best way to get to the William Gyles Guesthouse from the airport is by a minivan shuttle service run by Cozy Cab. Cost from airport to Newport is $20 one way. For reservation call 1-800-846-1502 if out of the area or 401-846-2500 if in Rhode Island. Ask them to drop you off at the William Gyles Guesthouse in Newport. The people from Cozy Cab may want to drop you off at a hotel near the hostel rather than at the hostel. If so, have them drop you off at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Newport. From there you can get to the hostel by catching a local cab ($4) or by walking 15 minutes along the waterfront (beautiful walk!). This scenario could happen because you are taking an airport "shuttle" which costs $20, not a private taxi, which costs $75. If they drop you off at the hostel when taking the shuttle, thank them profusely because they went out of their way for you and gave you special treatment. We knew we'd be arriving late at night, so we e-mailed in advance to make sure someone would be there to check us in when we arrived. They assured us they would, but when we arrived nobody was there. If it wasn't for another guest being awake and in the lobby at the time, we wouldn't have been able to get in. We then had to find our room number on the list of check-ins for the day, and then find our key and show ourselves up to our room (after leaving a note for the absent staff telling them we'd pay in the morning). Then we got woken up an hour later by the staff, just to be told that it was fine for us to pay the next morning. Then nobody was there there next morning either, so we eventually only paid the following evening. Other than that, it was quite a pleasant stay, although the place is so close to the subway that you can hear the trains going by all night.

arunze3065 from Germany stayed here on 29th July 2007
the bedrooms very clean and great. the bathrooms were just DISGUSTING!! clean them more often!! the neighborhood was awful esp. at night!! It was very dangerous to walk around in east harlem and even a guy followed us to the hostel!!! the next day we took a cab!!! but the staff was definitely the friendliest I've ever met!! :)

alexabate2628 from England stayed here on 01st August 2007
Overall it's fine but if you're a female alone either except getting taxis back at night or stay somewhere else. (Cost of taxi back may equal cost of staying somewhere Downtown)

Jiri from Czech Republic stayed here on 13th July 2007
Spent 7 nights. If you want to use the accomodation for overnight only and spend the days in the city it is the perfect place on Manhattan. Breakfast usually bread, butter, marmelade, juice, coffee, tea, toastmaker - all on serve yourself basis - good way to start the day. The neighborhood seemed safe, short walk from subway to guest house. Stayed there in 2 bed room with TV and airconditioning, simply equipped, good enough for our needs. Showers / bathrooms in the hall separate for male/female. Would come here again. The price for private room for 2 is unbeatable. Free internet.

Martina from Austria stayed here on 07th July 2007
we didn't expect more or less. unfortunaltey it is impossible to get into contact with the front desk over the phone or e-mail. they simply do not write back and tell you a wrong phone number. altogether our stay was pretty well

rebeccajanestancliffe8789 from England stayed here on 11th July 2007
this was a fantastic welcoming place to stay...there is really no communal space to hang out in in the evenings if you're up for a quiet night, or none that is pleasant to chill out'...the breakfast is a little uninspiring, but i would most certainly stay here again, the staff are really wonderful...

Jan from Germany stayed here on 29th June 2007
Let me give you a breathless rundown of the facts: the air-conditioning did a fine job, the bed (matress) was good (not too hard nor soft), cleanliness (incl. toilets and showers) OK, breakfast also OK, and sometimes there were freshly made pancakes , which elevated this experience. The staff is friendly, and you are only two blocks away from the subway, and even when we came back at 12 in the night we didn't feel frightened by the surroundings (but things might look differently if you are female and on your own, but it's not necessarily dangerous). To sum it up: you won't get the same amount of bang for your buck anywhere else on Manhattan!

lewispreece4710 from Wales stayed here on 09th July 2007
We've been travelling around the U.S for the last 2months and this has been the best hostel we have stayed in, including some of the motels and hotels. We would rocomend this to others as is is really good value for money, very clean, the staff are really nice. The sub way is just around the corner and it takes about 5-10minsmax to get to times square which is really good.

Paolo from Italy stayed here on 22nd June 2007
Hi, this hostel is ok, safe and really cheap, just 60 $ a day for a double-room including breakfast, tv & conditioning air in the room. The location is not so central but u are so near the underground (maybe a little too much 'coz u can sometime hear it) and just at 20 mins from the center by underground. I spent a good time there. See u everybody!!

gwen_blabla4569 from France stayed here on 24th June 2007
I really appreciated the breakfast, and on the whole, it is much cleaner than the other hostels I went to. I will come back.

Rafael from Spain stayed here on 07th August 2007
I wish you cleaned the room everyday instead of waiting till the last day. Also, some desk and chairs would be nice. Our room was smelly too. Otherwise, everything was ok.

msertac837343 from USA stayed here on 07th August 2007
It was the worst experience I have ever had!!! The linens and the pillow cases were so dirty. There were roaches in the room, and the staff were so rude. Basically everything was horrible. Even if you have to stay there check the room before you make the payment. M-

i just can give a warning to evereybody, who wants to go to this hostel. It is not clean, there is no aircondition in every room, and if there are problems, you can not even get the manager, he is always "out"..., this hostal is not worth the money you pay, and if you want to leave earlier, you don`t even get your money back!

Brent from Canada stayed here on 05th August 2007
The exterior of the building looks great. the inside is so-so. its really close to the north end of central park in a good neighbourhood. having a fridge in the room was a major plus

doors won't shut, you have to lock them at all times; only one key for a 4-bed room; bunkbeds are not safe at all and very noisy

The place is serviceable, but the website is misleading. Probably slightly overpriced for what you get.
